Halal food: how to find it and check it
A place is halal when a certifier such as HMC has certified it, or when the place says so itself. Highstreett only calls a place halal on one of those two grounds, and shows the date we checked.

How to check a place yourself
Look for a certificate
The Halal Monitoring Committee (HMC) gives three checks: a yellow HMC sticker in the window, a certificate renewed every year, and the shop listed on HMC's own website, halalhmc.org. Other certifiers, such as the Halal Food Authority (HFA), issue their own certificates. Ask to see it.
No certificate? Ask the place
Ask where the meat comes from and whether all of it is halal. Some restaurants buy halal chicken and lamb but still serve pork or bacon.
Ask about alcohol
Halal meat doesn't mean an alcohol-free menu. If that matters to you, ask before you book.
What our labels mean
We never decide a place is halal from its cuisine, its name or who owns it. We record what a certifier or the place itself says, and the date we checked.
| What you'll see | What it means |
|---|---|
| Certified | A halal certifier, such as HMC, lists the place. |
| The venue says its food is halal | The place says so on its own website, menu or sign. No certifier was found. |
| Not confirmed | We looked and found no statement either way. That doesn't mean it isn't halal: ask the place. |

Questions
Which cities have a Highstreett halal guide?
Hackney, London and Lincoln, so far. A place gets its own page here by itself once at least 3 of its listings are certified or say their food is halal.
Does Highstreett certify places as halal?
No. We're not a certifier. We record what a certifier such as HMC says, or what the place says itself, with the date we checked. Check the certificate when you visit.
Can I make every search halal-only?
Yes. Sign in, open your preferences and pick Halal under religious requirements. It's treated as a hard filter on every search, and a place is only called halal when its own listing says so.
