How to Find Independent Shops in the UK, and How We Check
Highstreett is a product search tool for independent UK retailers. You describe what you want, it finds the item, and it tells you which independent stocks it. Independence is not inferred from a shop looking small: it is checked against Companies House and the Persons with Significant Control register, which publish who actually controls a UK company. As of 30 August 2026, we have verified 11 independent businesses in Lincoln and excluded 0 that turned out to be chain, franchise or private equity owned.
What we found when we checked
This is the part most independent directories do not publish, so here is ours.
Every business below looked independent. Each had a distinct name, a local address, and no obvious branding. Each failed verification once we traced the ownership.
Every one of these is a legitimate business and several are good pubs. The point is only that none of them is independent, and that you would not know by looking.
That is why the check is documentary rather than visual.
How the check works
Companies House is free, public and searchable. Since 2016 it has also published the PSC register, naming the people who ultimately control a company. From November 2025, directors and PSCs have had to verify their identity under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act 2023.
So in the UK, “is this shop independent” has a paper answer. We follow the ownership chain and exclude anything resolving to a chain, a franchise operator, or a private equity holding structure.

Where we get it wrong
Three honest limits.
Coverage is small. Verification is manual. We are in one city properly and adding businesses one at a time.
Absence of evidence is not clearance. Automated checks can demote a business but never promote one. A verified badge requires a person to have looked.
Listed is not verified. Some businesses appear without a badge. That means we have not finished checking, not that they passed.
What it costs you
A smaller selection. That is the entire trade, and it is not close. Amazon has more books than we will ever have. Google indexes more shops than we will ever verify. If you want the widest choice at the lowest price delivered tomorrow, use them.
Questions
Is Highstreett a marketplace?
No. We do not process payments, hold stock, or take a cut of a sale. We find the item and link you to a retailer who has it. For books that is Bookshop.org, which pays 30 percent of the cover price to an independent bookshop.
How do you verify a business is independent?
We look the company up on Companies House, read the Persons with Significant Control register to find who controls it, and follow the ownership chain upward. If it resolves to a chain, a franchise operator or a private equity structure, it fails. A person checks every verification. Automated checks can only demote.
What counts as a chain?
Any business under common ownership with multiple outlets, any franchise operation regardless of who owns the individual site, and any business whose ultimate controlling party is a private equity or investment vehicle. A franchisee may well be a local owner, but the brand, supply and pricing are not locally controlled, so it does not pass.
Does it cost anything to use?
No. There is no charge and no account required to search. We may earn a commission if you buy a book through a link, which does not change what we show you or in what order.
Why do some businesses not have a verified badge?
Because we have not finished checking them. We publish the distinction rather than hiding it. A badge means someone traced the ownership. No badge means the work is outstanding.
