The badge means locally and privately owned. National chains, franchises and private-equity-controlled businesses do not qualify. A local owner with a few locations can still be independent.
How ownership is checked
The check considers Companies House, the PSC register and supporting evidence about control. A small shopfront or unfamiliar name is not enough. See the evidence available on the listing and our ownership methodology.
Search omits a disclosed set of national fast-food, coffee and high-street retail chains. Pub searches retain brewery and pub-estate venues so nearby options are not misleadingly absent. Other known chains can appear without the badge. Shop Local hides identified non-independent businesses; unchecked places can remain.

Does Highstreett only list independent businesses?
No. Listings can include unchecked businesses, regional groups and chains. The verified independent badge is a positive ownership finding, not a condition of being listed.
What does verified independent mean?
Locally and privately owned, not a national or multinational chain, franchise or business controlled by private equity. A local owner with several locations can still qualify. Outlet count alone does not decide independence.
What does a missing badge mean?
A missing badge is neutral. The business may be unchecked, unresolved or non-independent. It does not mean that a check is pending or that the business has passed.
Does Shop Local guarantee that every result is independent?
No. Shop Local hides identified non-independent businesses, but unchecked places can remain. Look for the verified independent badge for a positive ownership finding.
Does it cost anything to search?
Searching is free. Some book links may earn Highstreett a commission, disclosed where they appear. Businesses cannot pay to improve their position in results.
