Editor’s verdict: The search returned six real books and none first published in 2026, and its own reply said as much. Its checker dropped seven more titles because the author or title did not match a real edition, which is the checker doing its job. The newest book it kept is from 2023. That is why this page was built by hand: the six above are its unedited result, and the twelve below were each checked against a publisher record.
The rule for this page: a science fiction novel first published in 2026, meaning its first UK or US edition is dated 2026 and was out by 8 October. A new paperback of an older book does not count, and neither does a book first published in Britain in 2025 that reached America this year. Books sold mainly as fantasy, and science fiction romance, are left to our other pages.
Series books are here only when the series is widely read and the entry says where a new reader should start, or when the book stands on its own. That rules out the long run of self-published series instalments that fill the anticipated-books lists, such as Expeditionary Force books 19 and 20 and Galaxy’s Edge book 25.
The prizes given in 2026 honoured 2025 books. E. J. Swift’s When There Are Wolves Again won the Arthur C. Clarke Award on 12 August 2026, and the Clarke goes to a novel first published in the UK the year before. Alix E. Harrow’s The Everlasting, a fantasy, won the Hugo Award for best novel at LAcon V on 30 August 2026, from a ballot of 2025 books. Neither is on this list, and both are worth reading.
New books in series you may already read
Five books from widely read series. Each entry says where to begin, and two of the starting points are already picks on our Books like Project Hail Mary page.
1. Children of Strife, Adrian Tchaikovsky (2026)
Children of Time, book four · first contact · 704 pages in the UK
Generations after a terraforming team altered a distant planet, a research crew finds the lost outpost. The scientist Alis wakes to find most of the crew gone, leaving only the captain, Cato, and the ship’s AI, Kern, and the two go down to the planet to find them. It is a fourth book about what intelligence looks like when it is not human. Start with Children of Time, from 2015; this one leans on the earlier books’ ideas more than their plots.

2. Platform Decay, Martha Wells (2026)
The Murderbot Diaries, book eight · rescue mission · 256 pages
On an extraction job, Murderbot guides a fellow security unit, Three, onto a Corporation Rim station built to look like a planetary landscape, then is talked into a longer rescue of five more people. The humour and the reluctant care for humans are what readers of the series come for. Start with All Systems Red, the first novella, which is short enough to read in an evening.
Edition source: Tor US hardback, May 2026 (5 May per the series announcement and library records; the publisher’s page could not be read); the same edition is sold in the UK. ISBN 9781250827005.
3. The Faith of Beasts, James S. A. Corey (2026)

4. Radiant Star, Ann Leckie (2026)
standalone in the Imperial Radch universe · 368 pages
In the city of Ooioiaa the Radch empire is about to absorb a religious site into its own culture, and allows one last man to join the mummified saints there. The decision lands on a city already short of food, rioting and cut off from the empire. The publisher sells it as a standalone, and it reads without the Ancillary books; Ancillary Justice is the place to go next if you want the empire itself.

5. Blightfall, Brandon Sanderson with Janci Patterson (2026)
young adult · Skyward universe · first of a new trilogy
Arturo Mendez and Skyward Flight escort diplomats to make contact with a human settlement on Blightfall, a planet overgrown with invasive forest, and are attacked as soon as they land. It opens a new trilogy, so it is a fair starting point, but readers of Skyward will know the pilots and the war behind them. It is written for readers of 12 and up, which makes it the lightest book here.
Edition source: Gollancz UK hardback, 1 September 2026; Delacorte US the same day (ISBN 9780593707050). ISBN 9781399617284.

Three standalones and the first book of a new trilogy. No earlier reading needed.
6. The Last Contract of Isako, Fonda Lee (2026)
standalone · corporate samurai in space · first adult SF from the author of Jade City
Isako is a legendary swordswoman whose long-standing client suddenly retires. She means to leave the work, until a competitor offers one final contract that draws her into corporate espionage and duels of obligation, and back towards her former apprentice. If you know Lee from the Green Bone fantasy books, this is the same interest in loyalty and family firms, moved to a corporate future.

7. Hell’s Heart, Alexis Hall (2026)
standalone · Moby-Dick retold above Jupiter · queer space opera · 464 pages
Earth is dead and what is left of humanity lives under domes kept alive by fuel taken from vast creatures in Jupiter’s atmosphere. A nameless narrator signs on with a monster-hunting ship and a captain set on the biggest of them. It follows Melville’s plot closely, digressions and all, and has a slow-burn romance between the narrator and a harpooner from old Earth. Hall is best known for romance, and this is a full move into space opera.

8. The Photonic Effect, Mike Chen (2026)
standalone · 24th-century space opera · first contact
Captain Demora Kim and the crew of the Horizon come home after ten years stranded, to a galactic cluster split by civil war. Flashbacks show her fight to stop the engine she built becoming a weapon.

9. The Infinite State, Richard Swan (2026)

Katherine Fuller, widow of a senior figure in the ruling party of a fascist, galaxy-spanning empire, inherits enough money to buy an uninhabited world and plans to build a democracy on it. The empire moves to stop her. The story opens on three people at once: Katherine, a disgraced investigator and a hypersled pilot. It is the first book of a trilogy, from the author of the Empire of the Wolf fantasies.

Two debuts and an ending
Two first novels from writers known for short fiction, and a short book about the end of the world that is more road trip than science.
10. Sublimation, Isabel J. Kim (2026)
debut · speculative · migration and doubles · 368 pages
In this world, crossing a border splits a person into two: one who leaves and one who stays. Soyoung Rose Kang has not spoken to her Korean self in twenty years, until their grandfather’s funeral brings her back to Seoul, while her best friend’s American self pulls her into a conspiracy over who controls the process. It is a book about immigration as much as a thriller, and parts are told in the second person.
Edition source: Tor US hardback, June 2026 (2 June per Tor’s listing on retail and library records); Picador UK hardback 9 July 2026 (ISBN 9781035065523). ISBN 9781250376794.
11. The Subtle Art of Folding Space, John Chu (2026)
debut · multiverse · family comedy · 240 pages
Ellie, a physics student, learns that her cousin has found an illicit device keeping her comatose mother alive, and that it is destabilising the physics of the universe. Saving her mother may mean tampering with the hidden layer that holds the multiverse together, while her older sister makes everything harder. Chu, a Hugo winner for short fiction, writes it with jokes aimed squarely at engineers.
Edition source: Tor US hardback, April 2026 (7 April per retail and library records; the publisher’s page could not be read). ISBN 9781250425409.
12. We Burned So Bright, TJ Klune (2026)
standalone · apocalypse · road trip · 176 pages
A rogue black hole will reach Earth in about a month. Don and Rodney, married after forty years together, drive from Maine to Washington State to finish some business, meeting other people getting ready for the end. The science is a premise rather than the subject, and the publisher’s page names no genre. Pick it for the two men, not the physics.
Edition source: Tor UK hardback, 30 April 2026; Tor US 28 April 2026 (ISBN 9781250881236). ISBN 9781035009428.
The editions behind these choices
The ISBN beside each book is the edition whose page we read on 8 October 2026: the UK publisher’s page where one exists, otherwise the American edition. For three books published by Tor in New York (Platform Decay, The Subtle Art of Folding Space, Sublimation) the publisher’s own page refused our reader, so the month comes from the Publishers Weekly review and the day from library and retail records. The UK date of The Photonic Effect could not be confirmed. Prices and UK shop stock were not checked.
The honest bit
This is a checked list, not a ranking. A current-year list can only say what is out and what the publishers and early reviewers say about it; none of these books has had time to settle. That is why there are no scores, and why four of the twelve are well-known names on any list of the year: Tchaikovsky, Wells, Corey and Leckie.
Several books that appear on lists of 2026 science fiction are left off. Halcyon Years by Alastair Reynolds is often dated January 2026, which is its American edition; Hachette UK gives its British hardback as 30 October 2025, so it was first published in 2025. Erebus-13 by David Wellington and Wolfskin by Jeremy Szal end trilogies that are not widely read enough to start at book three: begin with Paradise-1 and Stormblood instead. Victorious by V. E. Schwab is filed as fantasy by its UK publisher, Seek the Traitor’s Son by Veronica Roth is sold as a romantic epic and shelved as fantasy, The Demon Star by Jesse Aragon is science fantasy built on gods and demons, and Love Is an Algorithm by Laura Brooke Robson is a romantic comedy about dating apps.
Still to come: The Forever Dead, the last of John Birmingham’s Cruel Stars trilogy, is due from Head of Zeus in October or November 2026 (listings disagree). The Infinite Extent, the sixth Bobiverse book by Dennis E. Taylor, came out on Audible on 10 September 2026, but has no print edition yet. We will look at both when we next check this list, in early November.
Questions
What won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2026?
When There Are Wolves Again by E. J. Swift, announced on 12 August 2026. The Clarke goes to a science fiction novel first published in the UK in the previous year, so the 2026 award is for a 2025 book.
Is there a new Murderbot book in 2026?
Yes. Platform Decay, the eighth Murderbot Diaries book, was published by Tor in May 2026. If you are new to the series, start with All Systems Red.
Do I need to read Children of Time before Children of Strife?
It helps. Children of Strife is the fourth book in the series and assumes you know how the earlier books treat non-human intelligence. Children of Time, from 2015, is the place to begin.
Book search is better at older science fiction than at this year’s. Describe what you want, such as first contact without war, or space opera with a small crew, and it will look further back than any list of new releases.
Describe the science fiction you want next
Books like Project Hail Mary: Children of Time and All Systems Red, the starting points for two series above, are picks there, with the rest of the problem-solving science fiction we would hand a new reader.
Best horror books 2026: Paul Tremblay’s Dead but Dreaming of Electric Sheep, horror as much as science fiction, is there rather than here.
How the comparison was bounded
Checked 8 October 2026 against four lists that could be read: Pan Macmillan’s best science fiction of 2026 (updated 25 September 2026; names Children of Strife and Sublimation), Risingshadow’s most anticipated science fiction of 2026 (names Children of Strife, The Faith of Beasts, Platform Decay, The Last Contract of Isako and Blightfall), She Reads’ most anticipated science fiction and fantasy of 2026 (Platform Decay, We Burned So Bright, Hell’s Heart, The Photonic Effect) and The Portalist’s (Radiant Star, We Burned So Bright, Sublimation, The Subtle Art of Folding Space). The Infinite State appears on none of the four. mynextbook.ai refused our reader, Grimdark Magazine has no 2026 best-of list yet, and a Screen Rant list could not be fetched, so none of those three is counted.
