Jollyes is owned by TDR Capital, a private equity firm based in London. TDR's fund bought control of the business on 26 March 2024 from an earlier private equity owner, Kester Capital, and the latest filed accounts name a TDR fund as the ultimate controlling party.

The shops are run by a company called Leonard F. Jollye (Brookmans Park) Limited, based in Waltham Abbey, Essex. Twelve companies sit between that shop company and the TDR firm that controls the top of the chain, and each one owns at least 75% of the one below.

So the answer is private equity. Jollyes is not listed on the stock market, and it is not family-owned now, although it was until 2018.

Which company runs the shops?

The company behind Jollyes is Leonard F. Jollye (Brookmans Park) Limited, company number 01015506, incorporated on 24 June 1971. Its registered office is 1 Lea Road, Waltham Abbey, and its registered activity is selling pets and pet food in specialist shops. The terms and conditions on the Jollyes website name it as the company "trading as Jollyes".

Its register of persons with significant control names one owner, another company, and each company above it does the same. Following those entries up the register gives this chain, from the shop company to the top:

  1. Leonard F. Jollye (Brookmans Park) Limited, which runs the shops
  2. Leonard F Jollye (Holdings) Limited
  3. Jollyes Group Limited
  4. Jollyes Retail Group Limited
  5. Jaguar Bidco Limited
  6. Jaguar Holdco Limited
  7. Jaguar Midco Limited
  8. Jaguar Topco Limited
  9. Clifford Bidco Limited
  10. Clifford Midco Limited
  11. Clifford Investments Holdco Limited
  12. Clifford Equityco Limited
  13. TDR Capital Nominees 2023 Limited
  14. TDR Capital LLP

The four Jaguar companies were all incorporated on 15 May 2018, as Kester Capital bought the business, and the four Clifford companies on 14 February 2024, ahead of TDR's purchase. Long chains like this are common after private equity deals, and the register shows the same answer at every step: the company above holds at least three-quarters of the shares.

Who is TDR Capital?

TDR Capital LLP is a London private equity firm. Its address on the register, 20 Bentinck Street, is also the address of the Clifford companies. The group accounts of Clifford Equityco, the top company with published accounts, say the ultimate controlling party is TDR Capital Special Opportunities Fund 1 LP, one of the funds TDR manages.

Those accounts say the group bought Jaguar Topco, the parent of the Jollyes companies, on 26 March 2024. A month earlier, on 28 February 2024, Retail Gazette reported that TDR had agreed to buy a majority stake, that Kester Capital had made 4.2 times its 2018 investment, and that Andy Bond, a former boss of Asda, would become non-executive chairman. The register shows TDR's nominee company holding at least 75% of Clifford Equityco. It does not say who holds the rest.

Who owned it before?

From May 2018 to March 2024 the top of the Jaguar chain was controlled by private equity. The register lists two former owners of Jaguar Topco for that period: GCP Europe GP II LLP, a Scottish partnership holding 75% or more, and Kester Capital LLP, recorded as having significant influence or control. When Retail Gazette reported the 2018 sale, it named the buyer as Kester Capital.

Before that, Jollyes was a family business. The register shows two members of the Pollard family controlling Jollyes Retail Group, one with more than half the shares and one with more than a quarter, until 25 May 2018. Retail Gazette reported in 2018 that the business dated back to 1935.

Who runs it?

Adam Dury is chief executive. Retail Gazette reported on 12 May 2026 that he had been formally appointed, having been chief executive designate since October 2025. The register lists him as the only current director of the shop company and of every company above it up to Jaguar Topco. Andy Bond chairs the business and sits on the board of Clifford Equityco with two other directors.

How big is it?

The latest filed group accounts, for Clifford Equityco, cover the period from its incorporation on 14 February 2024 to 1 June 2025, and were filed at Companies House on 18 February 2026. Because the group bought Jollyes on 26 March 2024, they cover about fourteen months of trading.

They give turnover of £181.6 million for the period and a loss before tax of £19.5 million, after interest, depreciation and one-off costs. They say Jollyes had 100 stores when it was bought, opened ten and closed one, and had 109 at the end of the period, with five more opened before the accounts were signed. The one-off costs included restructuring, which the accounts say covered phasing out the sale of live animals. They describe Jollyes as the UK's second-largest pet retailer.

The year to May 2026 has not been filed yet. The Grocer reported on 9 July 2026 that sales in that year rose 8.7% to £169 million, from 123 stores after 14 openings.

Is Jollyes independent?

Not in the sense we use. Our verified independent badge marks a locally and privately owned business, not a branch of a chain. A Jollyes superstore is one of more than a hundred run by the same company and owned by a private equity fund, so it is a branch.

The useful label is national chain, owned by private equity. The accounts say all its stores are in the UK, and the register gives no sign of franchising: the shops are run by the company itself.

The biggest pet retailer is owned differently again. Pets at Home is listed on the stock market, with no controlling shareholder. Independent pet shops are a separate matter, owned by the people who run them, and they are what our search is built to find. For the online side, see independent pet supplies online, and who owns the rest.

Questions people ask

Is Jollyes owned by Pets at Home?

No. The two are rivals with unconnected owners. Jollyes belongs to TDR Capital; Pets at Home is a listed company owned by its shareholders.

Is Jollyes owned by Asda?

No. TDR Capital, which owns Jollyes, is also one of Asda's owners, and the Jollyes chairman, Andy Bond, used to run Asda. But Jollyes is not part of Asda, and no Asda company appears in its ownership chain.

Who is the CEO of Jollyes?

Adam Dury, formally appointed chief executive in May 2026.

Is Jollyes a family business?

It was. Members of the Pollard family controlled it until May 2018, when Kester Capital bought it. It has been owned by private equity since then.

Is Jollyes on the stock market?

No. Its shares are held privately, at the top by a TDR Capital company.
