Who owns Dishoom?

Its founders and an investment firm, together. Since 15 September 2025 Dishoom has been owned through Ruby Topco Holdings Limited, a holding company set up for an investment by L Catterton, the consumer investment firm. The founders, Shamil and Kavi Thakrar, and several managers also hold shares in that company. Dishoom's latest accounts say there is no ultimate controlling party.
Before 2025 Dishoom had no outside investor. The deal was reported as the restaurant group's first private equity investment, and the size of L Catterton's stake has not been published.
What does the register show?
The restaurants are run by Dishoom Limited, company number 06226963, incorporated on 25 April 2007. Its registered activity is licensed restaurants.
Its persons-with-significant-control register names one owner, Ruby Bidco Holdings Limited, with 75% or more of the shares and votes, from 15 September 2025. The register for Ruby Bidco Holdings names Ruby Midco Holdings Limited, and the register for Ruby Midco names Ruby Topco Holdings Limited, each with 75% or more. The three Ruby companies were incorporated in London on 29, 30 and 31 July 2025.
At the top the register stops. Ruby Topco Holdings carries a statement, from 29 July 2025, that there is no registrable person or company: no one, on the register's test, holds more than a quarter of it in their own name or controls it. Dishoom Limited's accounts for the year to 28 December 2025 say the same in their own words: its immediate parent is Ruby Bidco Holdings, the largest group to prepare accounts will be Ruby Topco Holdings, and "There is no ultimate controlling party."
Who holds the shares?
Ruby Topco Holdings' confirmation statement, made up to 28 July 2026, lists its shareholders. The ordinary shares that carry votes are the A ordinary shares, and about 63% of them are held by SL508 S.à r.l., a company registered in Luxembourg. About 27% are held by a company called Liberty Limited, and two more companies, Ballard Limited and Croxton Limited, hold about 4% each. The chief executive, Brian Trollip, and a handful of other managers hold the rest. Shamil and Kavi Thakrar each hold B ordinary shares, which the statement says carry no votes.
The register does not say who is behind SL508 S.à r.l. or the three other companies. L Catterton's investment was reported in August 2025 as an undisclosed stake, and Dishoom has not said how its ownership divides between the investor, the founders and their families. So we can say who the shareholders are on paper, but not which of them is L Catterton or how much each side owns.
Who owned it before?
From 2016, when the control register began, until 15 September 2025, Dishoom Limited's register named Braunstone Limited, a company incorporated in 1948, as holding 75% or more. Braunstone's own register listed members of the Thakrar family with influence over a trust that controlled it until 2017, and since then has said there is no registrable person. The register also lists two earlier individual shareholders, each holding between a quarter and a half through 2017.
Dishoom's accounts describe the 2025 change plainly: "On 15 September 2025, the ownership structure of the company was changed to facilitate an investment from L Catterton to support its strategic growth plans."
Who is L Catterton?
A consumer-focused investment firm. The Caterer, reporting the deal on 4 August 2025, described it as a US firm backed by the luxury goods group LVMH. The law firm CMS, which advised Dishoom, announced on 5 August 2025 that it had worked on the investment. Neither said how big the stake was. The Caterer reported that The Sunday Times put Dishoom's value at about £300 million, a figure Dishoom did not confirm.
Who started Dishoom?
Shamil and Kavi Thakrar. They opened the first Dishoom in Covent Garden, London, in 2010, styled on the old Irani cafés of Bombay. The Caterer reported that they would stay in charge of the business alongside Brian Trollip, who became chief executive in 2024.
How big is Dishoom?
Dishoom Limited's turnover was £159.4 million in the year to 28 December 2025, up 16% from £137.1 million, and its profit before tax was £4.2 million. The accounts say two new sites opened in 2025. When the Glasgow restaurant opened in August 2025, The Caterer counted 11 Dishoom restaurants in the UK and four Permit Room bars. The accounts also record costs for selling shares in the L Catterton deal.
Is Dishoom independent?
Not by our verified independent badge, which marks a locally and privately owned business rather than a chain, franchise or private-equity estate. Dishoom is a restaurant group with branches in several cities, run by one company, and since 2025 it has had a private equity investor among its owners. A Dishoom is a branch of that business.
The useful label is restaurant chain, founder-led, with private equity investment. It is not a franchise: Dishoom runs its restaurants itself. It is also a very different business from the big national chains. For comparison, Wagamama is owned outright by private equity and PizzaExpress by its former lenders.

Questions people ask
Is Dishoom private equity owned?
Partly, as far as anyone can tell from the outside. L Catterton invested in 2025 and the ownership was rearranged for its investment, but the size of its stake has not been published, the founders and managers still hold shares, and the accounts say no one has ultimate control.
Is Dishoom Indian-owned?
It is a British company, founded in London by Shamil and Kavi Thakrar, and run from London. Its menu is inspired by the Irani cafés of Bombay. Its new holding companies are registered in England, though the largest holder of voting shares is a Luxembourg company.
Is Dishoom owned by LVMH?
No. L Catterton is backed by LVMH, according to The Caterer, but LVMH does not appear anywhere on Dishoom's register, and L Catterton itself holds only an undisclosed stake.
Is Dishoom a franchise?
No. The restaurants are run by Dishoom Limited itself.
