Crime fiction as literature, and a deeply felt, deeply entertaining end to one of contemporary crime's high-water-mark projects. Read the first two first, but this is a genuine event.
3. Ironwood, Michael Connelly

The bridge between prestige and mainstream, from the pre-eminent detective novelist of his generation. The second Catalina Island novel: Detective Sergeant Stilwell teams with Renée Ballard to work a drug-drop-turned-murder from both sides of the channel. Polished, relentlessly paced, expertly plotted. For Bosch fans, his bigger release, The Hollow, the 21st Harry Bosch novel, follows in October.

4. The Intrigue, Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Moreno-Garcia, of Mexican Gothic, in peak form: a con artist who preys on wealthy older women in 1940s Mexico teams up with a disenfranchised outsider to bilk her aunt for all they can, and maybe find happiness with each other. Stylish, atmospheric, and refreshingly outside the usual thriller geography.
5. Abir Mukherjee's 2026 crime novel

Mukherjee has been climbing the ranks of international thriller writers, and he has a new book coming in 2026 confirmed by crime-fiction sources, though full title and release details weren't locked down as we published, so check before you buy. His Wyndham and Banerjee series, historical crime set in 1920s British Calcutta, is a natural starting point in the meantime, and a fitting one for readers who like a colonial-history spine to their thrillers.
