Google Search and Independent Shops: What It Can and Cannot Filter

Google Search will find more shops than we ever will, and its AI Mode reached the UK in July 2025. What it does not do, and has never claimed to do, is filter results by who owns a business. There is no independent retailer filter in Google Search or Google Shopping. If you want the independent answer specifically, that filtering has to happen somewhere, and that is the only thing Highstreett does that Google does not.

Google is not the keyword box it was

Any comparison that describes Google as ten blue links is out of date, so here is the current picture.

AI Mode launched in the US in March 2025 and in the UK in July 2025. It fires multiple background queries at once and returns a written answer with product panels. Google reported it passing a billion monthly users in 2026.

Search personalises using your Web and App Activity, search history and location. You can turn it off with the show personalised results toggle.

For shopping, Google draws on a Shopping Graph it describes as holding more than fifty billion listings, and through 2025 and 2026 added price tracking, virtual try on and agentic checkout. Some of that is US first and not confirmed in the UK.

The one thing it does not do

Google’s job is to return the best answer from everything that exists. When the best answer is a chain, showing you the chain is correct behaviour.

Ours is narrower by construction. We return the best answer from independents only, and when no independent has the thing, we say so rather than quietly substituting someone who is not one.

What happens when we cannot help

Worth being explicit, because it happens often.

If no verified independent stocks what you are looking for, we tell you that plainly and, where it is useful, point you at a mainstream retailer with a clear label saying that is what we are doing. We do not pad results with businesses we have not verified, and we log the gap so we know which kind of shop to go and recruit.

An empty result that says so is more useful than a full one that quietly lowered the bar.

Questions

Does Google let you filter for independent businesses?

No. Google Search and Google Shopping have no ownership filter and no independent retailer badge. Results are ranked on relevance, authority and personalisation signals, none of which take account of who owns the seller.

What is Google AI Mode?

A conversational search experience launched in the US in March 2025 and the UK in July 2025. It runs several background queries simultaneously and returns a written answer with product panels rather than a list of links.

Is Highstreett an alternative to Google?

No, and it would be silly to claim so. Google answers almost any question about almost anything. Highstreett answers one question: where can I get this specific thing from an independent retailer. Most people should use both.

Does Google Search personalise results?

Yes, using Web and App Activity, search history and location. It can be turned off with the show personalised results toggle in Search settings.
