Camden Town Brewery is a London brewer owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, the brewing group based in Leuven, Belgium, whose beers include Budweiser, Stella Artois and Corona. AB InBev agreed to buy it in December 2015 and did not disclose the price, which the trade press has reported as £85 million.

The original Camden Town Brewery company no longer exists. In October 2021 the business moved into AB InBev UK Limited, which trades as Budweiser Brewing Group, and Camden Town Brewery Limited was struck off the register in October 2023. Camden Hells is still brewed in London, in Kentish Town and at a larger brewery in Enfield.

What does the register show?

Camden Town Brewery Limited, company number 06852176, was incorporated on 19 March 2009 as Camden Brewery Limited and renamed in August 2010. Its persons-with-significant-control register names one owner, Camden Brewing Group Limited, with 75% or more; that company was owned by ZX Ventures Limited, another AB InBev subsidiary. Both Camden companies were struck off at their directors' request in October 2023.

Camden's last accounts, for 2021, explain why. It stopped trading on 1 October 2021, when its trade and assets were transferred to AB InBev UK Limited. The accounts name Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, incorporated in Belgium, as the ultimate parent.

AB InBev UK Limited, company 03982132, was called Interbrew UK until 2005. Its accounts for 2025 name its breweries at Samlesbury and Magor, then add: "Our other breweries in Camden Town and Enfield are craft brewing innovators." Its owner is Nimbuspath Limited, whose owner is ABI UK Holding 1 Limited, whose registered owner is Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV, with 75% or more. The accounts name AB InBev as the ultimate parent and controlling party.

The brewery's website agrees about the owner but not about the company. Its footer reads "© 2026 AB InBev UK Ltd". But the shop's terms and conditions, read on 18 October 2026, still say the site is run by Camden Town Brewery Limited, company 06852176, the company struck off in 2023.

How did Camden Town Brewery come to be owned this way?

Jasper Cuppaidge, who came to London from Australia, opened The Horseshoe pub in Hampstead in 2006 and brewed his first beer there in 2007, the brewery's own history says. In spring 2010 he moved brewing to railway arches beneath Kentish Town West station, and the first Hells lager came out that autumn.

AB InBev announced on 21 December 2015 that it was taking over Camden, Brauwelt reported, without saying what it paid. The deal followed a crowdfunding round, and BrewDog's co-founder James Watt responded that BrewDog's bars "don't stock ABInBev beers", the Morning Advertiser reported.

The register shows the handover. On 7 January 2016 three directors left and four joined, and later that month the registered office moved from the Kentish Town brewery to Porter Tun House in Luton, an address AB InBev's UK companies then used.

What changed after the sale?

The takeover paid for a second brewery: about £30 million on a site in Enfield, north London, at a time when about 70% of Camden's beer was being brewed in Belgium, City AM reported in March 2017. It opened that May, Good Beer Hunting reported. In June 2026 the Morning Advertiser listed Enfield as one of AB InBev's three UK brewing hubs, making Hells Lager, Pale Ale and Eazy IPA.

In November 2020 The Grocer reported that from January 2021 Camden would be folded into Budweiser Brewing Group, with Cuppaidge stepping back into a consultant role. He left the board on 31 December 2020. Camden's 2021 accounts record the steps: most staff moved to AB InBev UK on 1 January, the taproom's bar staff moved to Pioneer Brewing Company Limited in July, and the trade and assets followed in October, "to simplify the legal structure".

The original arches are still in use. The brewery's website invites you to the Camden Beer Hall "under the original arches" at 55-59 Wilkin Street Mews, Kentish Town, with brewhouse tours, and lists no other bar. Pioneer Brewing Company, registered as Camden (Horseshoe) Limited until May 2021, reports bar and brewery tour income but does not name the bar.

Who owns AB InBev?

AB InBev is listed on Euronext Brussels, with secondary listings in Mexico and Johannesburg and depositary receipts traded in New York. Its largest shareholder is Stichting Anheuser-Busch InBev, a Dutch foundation with 33.99% of the votes at the end of 2025, according to AB InBev's annual report for 2025. The foundation is controlled jointly by two Luxembourg companies, BRC and EPS, under arrangements dating from the 2004 merger of Belgium's Interbrew and Brazil's Ambev. Altria Group held about 8.15% and Bevco Lux about 5.28%.

How big is Camden Town Brewery?

Its own figures stop in 2021. In 2020, its last full year of trading, Camden Town Brewery Limited had turnover of £41.5 million, a loss of £24.7 million and an average of 189 staff. In the nine months it traded in 2021, turnover was £34.3 million.

Since then its sales have sat inside AB InBev UK Limited, whose net revenue in 2025 was £1,858 million; the accounts do not show Camden separately. Pioneer Brewing Company took £1.1 million from its bar and tours in 2025, with an average of 19 bar staff.

Is Camden Town Brewery independent?

Not by our verified independent badge, which marks a locally and privately owned business rather than a chain, franchise or private-equity estate. Camden began as beer brewed in a Hampstead pub, but it has belonged to a listed multinational since January 2016, and since 2021 it has been brewed and sold by the same British company as Stella Artois and Budweiser.

The useful label is beer brand, owned by a listed multinational brewer. BrewDog, whose bars dropped Camden's beer after the takeover, is the subject of who owns BrewDog. For a London brewery that sold its brewing to a global group, see who owns Fuller's.

For independent pubs and bars, owned by the people who run them, see our pubs and bars in Lincoln and pubs and bars in Hackney E8.
