Google Maps and Independent Places: What It Ranks On
Google Maps is the best tool available for finding places near you, and it does personalise: Your Match scores since 2018, Gemini powered recommendations added through 2025. What it does not do is filter by ownership. We cover a fraction of the places Maps does, but every one has had its ownership traced through Companies House.
Correcting something we used to say
We previously described Google Maps as having no personalisation. That was wrong, and it is worth correcting in public rather than quietly.
Your Match, introduced in 2018, predicts how much you will like a place using location history, stated cuisine preferences and places you have rated. Through 2025 Google added Ask Maps, a Gemini powered conversational layer, plus Know Before You Go tips and AI review summaries. Several of these launched in the US and India first.

What it ranks on, and the consequence for new shops
Google states local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence takes account of review count and inbound links. Independent studies suggest proximity is the strongest single factor, with review count second.
That has a real consequence, worth stating carefully rather than dramatically. Weighting review volume rewards businesses that have been accumulating reviews for years. A shop that opened last spring starts from zero however good it is.
That is a structural disadvantage for new and small businesses. It is not evidence that Google prefers chains, and we are not going to claim it is.
Where we are worse, and it is not close
Google Maps has effectively every business in the country, with directions, opening hours and live busyness. We have 11 verified independents in Lincoln.
If you are anywhere we have not verified, Maps is the better tool and you should use it.
Questions
Does Google Maps have personalisation?
Yes. Your Match has predicted how much you will like a place since 2018, using location history, stated preferences and places you have rated. Google added Gemini powered recommendations, including Ask Maps, through 2025. It requires Location History and Web and App Activity to be enabled.
Does Google Maps favour chains?
Not deliberately, and there is no documented chain preference. Ranking is based on relevance, distance and prominence, and prominence includes review count. Because review counts accumulate over time, long established businesses are advantaged, and chains often have more reviews. The effect is real but the mechanism is age and volume, not ownership.
Can you filter Google Maps for independent businesses?
No. There is no ownership filter, independent badge, or chain exclusion in Google Maps.
How do you know a place is independent?
We look it up on Companies House and follow the ownership chain through the PSC register. Several Lincoln pubs that looked independent turned out to be owned by national pub groups. None of that is visible from the shopfront or the listing.
