Questions
Can a short non-fiction book actually say anything?
Routinely. On Bullshit is about 67 pages and is a serious philosophical argument. The Communist Manifesto is about 60 and reshaped a century. Seven Brief Lessons on Physics is about 96 and covers relativity and quantum gravity. Length and ambition are not the same measurement.
Where are the short history books?
On their own list, because history is a different reading job and mixing it in makes both lists worse. Hiroshima, Longitude and On Tyranny are all there. The one crossover kept here is The Periodic Table, which is science-memoir before it is history.
