What is the shortest classic novel worth reading?

The Yellow Wallpaper at about 50 pages, then The Metamorphosis at about 60 and Chess Story at about 80. None of them feels like a fragment: they are complete books that happen to be brief, which is the whole argument for the short shelf.

Which short classic should I start with?

The Great Gatsby, at about 180 pages, is the one that converts people. If you want something faster, Of Mice and Men and Animal Farm are both about 110 pages and finish in an evening. All three are on this list.
