Where to track your reading and buy the next book

No established service lets you do both. Goodreads tracks your reading and sends you to Amazon. StoryGraph tracks and sells nothing. Bookshop.org sells and tracks nothing. Highstreett does both, and it is new and small.

Is there a place where I can track and buy books

Not in one mature product. Trackers and buying routes grew up separately.

Goodreads and StoryGraph hold your history, ratings and want to read list. Bookshop.org sells books and keeps no reading history.

Where can I buy books without using Amazon

Bookshop.org is the main online route in the UK. Ordering direct from a bookshop is the other, by phone, email or in person.

Hive, Waterstones and Blackwell’s sell online too. Amazon is usually cheaper and faster. That is the trade.

Where can I buy books that supports independent bookshops

Bookshop.org. It is not an independent bookshop itself, it is a platform that funds independent bookshops.

Pick a shop from their map, or arrive through that shop’s own link, and it receives 30 percent of the cover price on your orders for a year. Otherwise 10 percent goes to an earnings pool shared monthly among participating independents. Chains cannot sign up for storefronts.

Our links go to a Bookshop.org search with no shop attached, so an order from one falls under the 10 percent pool rather than the 30 percent share. We are not in their affiliate programme and earn nothing on it. To have a particular shop paid, pick it on their site.

Who owns Goodreads

Amazon owns Goodreads. It acquired the company in 2013.

Is there a book tracking app not owned by Amazon

Yes. StoryGraph is the best known and it is independent. It is also a better tracker than we are, with more detail on mood, pace and format.

Highstreett is independent too, and keeps a shelf rather than a purchase history.

How do I export my Goodreads library

Goodreads lets you export your library as a CSV file from its site settings. Save it somewhere you can find it.

We will not describe what is inside their file, because that is theirs to change. Here is what we read from it: title, author, ISBN, your rating, which shelf a book is on, whether you own a copy, your shelf labels, and the dates you added and finished it. Unrecognised columns are ignored. A row with no title is skipped.

Can I import my Goodreads books somewhere else

Yes. StoryGraph accepts a Goodreads export, and so do we.

On our side the file is read in your browser, so the whole export is never uploaded. Each book is matched against your shelf on ISBN, or on title and author when there is no ISBN, so importing twice updates a book rather than duplicating it. Books we cannot identify are still saved. Read stays read, currently reading becomes reading, a book you own becomes owned, everything else becomes want to read.

What’s the difference between StoryGraph and Highstreett

StoryGraph is a reading tracker. Highstreett is a way to find the next book and buy it somewhere that is not Amazon.

Want the better tracker? That is StoryGraph. Want your shelf to feed recommendations that end at an independent bookshop? That is what we built.

We are new and the shelf is basic. We would rather say so.

Who this is not for

If you want reading challenges, group discussion, author pages or the largest catalogue, Goodreads is the better product and you should stay there.

If all you want is a tracker, StoryGraph is better at it than we are. Use it.

Questions

Is there a place where I can track and buy books?

Not in one mature product yet. Goodreads and StoryGraph track well, Bookshop.org sells well, and no established service does both. Highstreett does both, and it is new and small.

Where can I buy books without using Amazon?

Bookshop.org is the main online route in the UK. You can also order directly from a bookshop, or from Hive, Waterstones or Blackwell's.

Where can I buy books that supports independent bookshops?

Bookshop.org is a platform that funds independent bookshops rather than being one itself. Pick a shop on their site and it gets 30 percent of the cover price on your orders for a year. Our links carry no shop, so an order from one falls under the 10 percent pool instead.

Who owns Goodreads?

Amazon. It acquired Goodreads in 2013.

Is there a book tracking app not owned by Amazon?

Yes. StoryGraph is independent and is the strongest tracker of the two alternatives here. Highstreett is independent and tracks a shelf, though tracking is not all it does.

How do I export my Goodreads library?

Goodreads lets you export your library as a CSV file from its site settings. Save that file and you can bring it here.

Can I import my Goodreads books somewhere else?

Yes. StoryGraph accepts a Goodreads CSV, and so does Highstreett. On our side the file is read in your browser and matched against anything already on your shelf, so a book you have twice stays one row.

What is the difference between StoryGraph and Highstreett?

StoryGraph is a reading tracker and is better at tracking than we are. Highstreett keeps a shelf and uses it to recommend books, then points you at an independent source to buy them.
